The final public event for OpenSG Plus will be held on December 12th at Fraunhofer IGD. See this page for program and details. The developers will be present to explain and present their work, participation is free.

33 participants of the 2. Cave Programming Workshop experienced an introduction into the open secrets of OpenSG today. Starting from the basics via multi-threading to the different types of NodeCores all the parts necessary to develop interactive OpenSG applications were covered and applied in a final practical session.

The presentation of the paper A Multi-Thread Safe Foundation for Scenegraphs and its Extension to Clusters at the Eurographics Workshop on Parallel Graphics and Visualisation was an interesting event for everybody involved. The basic concepts of OpenSG multi-thread programming and cluster distribution were explained in detail to the 34 workshop participants.

As part of the 2. Cave Programming Workshop a one-day course on OpenSG will be presented. The covered topics include everything from the basic concepts to the details for an interactive OpenSG application, which will be applied in a practical session at the end of the day.

The Eurographics Panel Beyond the Polygon Horizon: New Trends in Interactive Rendering was received with high interest by the attendees. Representatives of the major current areas in interactive computer graphics discussed the pros and cons of their approaches in great detail and with high intensity.

OpenSG will be present at the Eurographics 2002 conference as well as at the Eurographics Workshop on Parallel Graphics and Visualisation. At Eurographics we organized the panel Beyond the Polygon Horizon: New Trends in Interactive Rendering, at the latter we will present the paper A Multi-Thread Safe Foundation for Scenegraphs and its Extension to Clusters.

The OpenSG presence at SIGGRAPH was a full success. Besides showing new demonstrations like the Slicer or heterogeneous clustering we got a number of interesting new contacts as well as intensifying some old contacts. Specifically the results of the HP and Sun contacts will probably manifest themselves rather soon.

OpenSG will be present at SIGGRAPH again this year. Our booth number is 4063, and we will be demonstrating the latest results, especially in the area of clustering. The Birds of a Feather session will be held on Tuesday, July 23rd, in the Alamo Ballroom, Salon A of the Marriott Riverwalk, right across from the Convention Center. Looking forward to meeting you there!

The OpenSG 1.1 version has been released. Go here to download it. The main enhancements are support for clusters and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. Other new things include Particles, Multi-Texturing, 3D- and Cube Textures and a host of new foregrounds and backgrounds.

The beta version has been released. The goal of this release is to find contributors for the project. It is a more useful than the alpha version, featuring materials and textures, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

On Jan. 31st the first full assembly of the OpenSG Forum was held. Representatives of nearly all members met in Darmstadt to get an overview of the first year of development of OpenSG and to comment on the plans for further development.

OpenSG PLUS has been selected as one of 15 winning projects in the second round of the 'Virtual And Augmented Reality' call of the german ministry for education and research (BMBF). As a consequence 9 different research instituions and universities are funded for the next 3 years to do reserach that can directly benefit OpenSG. OpenSG at SIGGRAPH: the core team used SIGGRAPH 2000 to create awareness for OpenSG and to get a feeling for the computer graphics scene in the area of scenegraphs in general and especially OpenSG. To do that a Birds-of-a-Feather session was held, which attracted about 25 participants from all over the world. In general we did our best to show the OpenSG colors.

The OpenSG forum has, together with a group of german universities and research insitutes for computer graphics, submitted a proposal called OpenSG PLUS as a part of the 'Virtual And Augmented Reality' call of the german ministry for education and research (BMBF). Out of the 173 submitted proposals 25 were accepted for a full proposal, OpenSG PLUS being one of them.

On January 28th 2000 the OpenSG Forum was succesfully founded as a part of the Zentrum für Graphische Datenverarbeitung e.V.. 50 participants from industry, mainly car, plane and plant design, and different research institutions and universities unanimously agreed on the necessity of such an initiative.
